I still remember filming this day like it was yesterday. After the DMV was hit with what was dubbed as “Snowmageddon”, I wanted to capture the breathtaking scenery from the skies. Before heading out, I created a list of landmarks in Southern Maryland. After planning out how to go about visiting each place, I grabbed my drone and GoPro for a little #EDventure

On the way to my first location, I made an impromptu stop at Little Flower School. There I saw people sledding down the big hill. Families spending time with each other having a good time. I decided to capture this moment. Then I went to Holy Face Catholic Church to capture some drone shots there. Sort of my pre-flight location to make sure everything was good to go. My next stop was Leonardtown Square. Took some more drone shots there. It was pretty neat to see the place empty – no cars – with only bulldozers clearing the roads. After taking some shots there, I headed over to Solomon’s Island. There I wanted to capture the famous Tiki Bar, Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, the bridge, and the general area. I was able to get most of the shots I wanted except for the bridge shot. I was running low on battery. There was actually another drone pilot there that took some shots too. I have yet to find his video of that day. If you find another “Snow Drone” video in Solomon’s Island, let me know. One thing I had to monitor closely this whole time was my battery life. Flying in cold weather really drains your battery and I wanted to save some juice for one more location. I had a decision to make. I wanted to go to Point Lookout, but I knew I was fighting daylight and the battery time I had left was less than a few minutes. I decided to just head over to Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church to get my final shots of the video.  I remember church goers witnessing me fly my drone  at this time. The plan was to fly through the trees towards the Mother Mary Statue water fountain in the middle of the pond and then do a reveal shot, but my batteries ran out.  That was pretty much my filming day. I managed to edit the video in one day and the rest is history.

A big shout out to Liza G. for flying over from Las Vegas to help shoot this wedding. It was a full day coverage that started out at the salon for some of the Bridal preparation and then over to the venue location where everything else was filmed till late in the evening. This venue was perfect from  a wedding cinematographer’s point of view. No need to travel to many different locations for the Bridal prep, the Groom prep, the ceremony location, reception, etc. Everything took place at the venue. On top of that anything I wanted to do for a wedding video was possible at this location with drone shots, the Bride and Groom photo op, the waterfront scenery, and having a beautiful sunset.

We are thankful for the attention this video has garnered as well as being featured at the latest Bridal show at Historic St. Mary’s City.

One last note, I wouldn’t be Winson Media if I didn’t mention about drone regulations for this event. Since the location is in restricted airspace and close to an active airport, Winson Media had to get authorization from the Patuxent River controlling agency in order to operate a drone. Winson Media follows all FAA regulations when operating with drones. Keep in mind most of Southern Maryland is under restricted airspace and it is illegal to operate a drone without authorization. Simply flashing your pilot certificate to the venue coordinator is not enough. You need to provide proof of authorization. Both the pilot and the person who hired the drone pilot will be held liable.

Since, they are not looking for anything on the professional side, I never recommend any of the 4k platforms. No need to spend at least $1000 dollars which I just recently learned is the cost of a Louis Vuitton bag. If it will not be used up to it’s 4K potential, it’s better to save the money and buy the budget friendly drones like the Phantom 3 Standard that costs $499.

Then comes the DJI Spark that was recently announced at the end of May. It is currently priced at $499. The Spark Fly More Combo (includes the DJI Spark, controller, propeller guards, extra propellers, extra battery, and charging hub) is priced at $699.

I recommend the new DJI Spark to these people. This drone is built for those who want to have fun with a drone and take quick selfies or videos. It is not meant for professional use. It fits in your book bag or pocket, has a 1080p stabilized camera, and many other features. Unlike the Phantom 3 standard, the DJI Spark is portable and contains flight safety technology. It can detect objects in front and below it. Very useful for first time users especially to that significant other who has never flown a drone before.
